Since 2006, the Liechtenstein Government has been supporting the microfinance program of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) with annual contributions. In 2010 the contribution amounted to 120'000 Swiss Franks. One half of this amount each went to the regular resources of UNCDF in the Microfinance Practice Area and to the "Development of a Sustainable Pro-Poor Financial Sector" program in Sierra Leone. The Capital Development Fund is a legally autonomous subsidiary organization of the UN and is administered by the UN Development Program (UNDP). The goal of the fund is to fight poverty in the least-developed countries of the world (LDC's) via initiatives relating to local self-administration and microfinance. The fund focuses on development in rural areas and especially in remote regions. There, it supports the formation of reliable and viable microfinance institutions through know-how, lending, and grants. Engaging in dialogue with the authorities of the recipient countries, it also aims to improve the parameters that are crucial for the development of the microfinance sector. The fund does not compete with private sector enterprises, but rather only gives initial aid. www.uncdf.org |
